This passion project is a proposed limited edition print zine created as part of a marketing campaign for legendary East London creative and cultural hub Village Underground, Shoreditch, to celebrate its 15 years of existence.
The graphics reflect the genesis of the venue, its creative ethos and the impressive roll call of performers that the club has helped break from diverse music genres, including hip-hop, electronica, rave, indie and grime.
The design concept is based on movement and celebration. There is an abstracted four-leaf clover motif design on the pages, a traditional symbol of bringing good luck. The design reflects the vibrant music scene that Village Underground has helped develop and sustain in East London and documents its impact on the global music scene.
The zine's fluid forms and vibrant colourway nod to early Acid House and Balearic club graphics. They are combined with a fluid-formed contemporary experimental typeface and a Swiss-style sans serif to create a neo-psychedelic aesthetic that aims to express the excitement and energy of the music and the creative ethos of Village Underground visually. The contemporary fragmented aesthetic of the zine signifies motion, performance, and partying and is an homage to club flyers and zines of the past.
